Transition and Change - in professional life:

Underline.png

Change is a constant process that happens whether we recognise it or not and whether we choose it or not.

Transition is a journey through change; to another level of capacity and capability.

Individual development is about standing back, with a trusted professional, and looking afresh at circumstances as you currently experience them. So the Transition route becomes clear; your next steps obvious and well within your reach.

The question is not what you look at - but what you see
— Henry D Thoreau

The Human Response to Change and Transition

No matter what our role, nationality, gender, age, status, wealth, we are subject to the laws of the animal kingdom - which means we are hard-wired to avoid change and maintain the world as we know it.

This is physiologically manifest, through the automatic and unconscious activation of the reptilian (limbic) brain; which operates through the secretion of stress chemicals such as Adrenalin and Cortisol. These chemicals activate our ‘survival' mechanism; the Fight/Flight/Freeze reactions; rendering our Thinking mind unavailable - until the chemical storm subsides and we can resume thinking.

“In the presence of Agitated Emotion; Thinking is Impaired”

- Coffman and Moliné - Follow This Path

Our work, as Leaders, is to regain equilibrium when our emotions are activated; otherwise our body goes on producing stress chemicals and our thinking and behaviour are inevitably defensive.

We need to learn to experience discomfort, without thinking that this signifies failure; to tolerate and breathe into the agitated moment - and thereby create a space for something else to emerge.

“Honour the Space between No Longer and Not Yet”  (Nancy Levin). We need to pause; slow down and look again - with a fresh mind and body.

Our work is to get curious when ‘things are going wrong’- rather than react by locking into false solutions; born of anxiety.
